Personalised attention: How NAC maintains high training standards

November 17, 2025

Nelson Aviation College is committed to providing focused, high-quality instruction to every student. A key factor in maintaining this standard, particularly during the critical flight training phase, is our dedication to a low student-to-instructor ratio.

The 1:5 advantage in flight training

NAC actively employs a policy of maintaining at least one dedicated flight instructor for every five students (1:5) during the flight training phases of our courses.

This ratio is intentionally set to ensure that every student receives the individual attention necessary to build competence, confidence, and precision in the cockpit. It translates directly into several critical training benefits:

  • Instructors can tailor feedback, schedule lessons flexibly, and devote maximum energy to each student's specific learning needs and pace.
  • With more time spent on focused, one-on-one training, students master complex procedures more effectively.
  • The close supervision fosters a safer training environment and helps maintain the high standards required by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ).

This emphasis on small groups ensures that, as a student at NAC, you are not just a number—you are an individual pilot trainee receiving world-class coaching.

While 1:5 ratio is our active and enforced benchmark, it may be extended for a short duration due to staff sickness, staff turnover, or operational requirements. In all cases where this ratio is temporarily extended, NAC's primary goal remains the same: to minimise disruption and ensure that the quality and safety of your flight training are never compromised.

Nelson Aviation College is dedicated to supporting our student community, providing industry-leading standards, and nurturing future pilots. Our commitment is to the success and professional development of every trainee.
